CHAPTER
ELEVEN
THE WEEK continued on like normal, except I avoided the pool as much as possible until I absolutely couldnât anymore, and nearly every thought I had ended with me going for a swim. I didnât swim every day, but I swam enough that not going made me feel weird. I wish Iâd been able to join the swim team, but they practiced during the mornings, when I had to be at work. So on Friday afternoon I dove into the pool and felt completely at peace for the first time since the day of the fight. The world drifted away, and all that was left was me, the water, and my muscles as I worked them until I could hardly pull myself out of the water. I sat there on the edge, panting and trembling. Iâd worked myself pretty hard, and I saw from the clock on the wall that Iâd been in the pool for over an hour. I was in pretty good shape, but that still took a lot out of me. I felt better, though, and far more clearheaded than I had before coming into the pool.
As I changed, I thought about life with Bryce, and more often than not, Co-Co too. They were my friends, and I didnât feel like extra baggage when we were together, or when we played board games in the middle of the floor and Co-Co beat me by a lot, or when we were playing video games. We were friends, and even though they were together and I had kissed both of them, it didnât feel weird to me.
It still wasnât anything I could tell my mom about, though. Too bad, because I found two missed calls from her waiting on my phone when I got out of the shower and went back to my locker. I played the messages while I got dressed.
âTrey, honey, itâs Mom. Weâre worried. Call us back. Your phone still works, doesnât it?â
I finished tying my shoes and shook my head. âYeah, it does.â I deleted that message and played the next.
âAll right, young man. You canât just ignore us forever. Weâre coming up there this weekend.â
I nearly tripped over my own feet at hearing that news, and I called her back before I even got out of the locker room. âMom?â I asked as soon as the phone stopped ringing.
âOh, so your phone does work. Your father and I were starting to get worried.â
I really hated that Iâd made her worry, but it was also just kind of nice not having to check in all the time anymore. Iâd gotten used to not talking to them for a week or more, like theyâd figured out how to give me a little space over the past few months. It was horrible of me not to want to call her every day, but it felt good to have that choice rather than to have it be made for me.
âYeah. Sorry about that. Look, I got your messages, and you donât have to come here.
